ASK THE COACH

What happens in a coaching session?
(Needs Clarity, Chicago, IL)

Dear Kathy,

Thanks for sending the Personal Inventory and the description about coaching. I'm not sure that I can even answer the Personal Inventory questions right now. I can see this is going to require a time commitment on my part and that may be the most difficult part. I feel like I don't even know what's important to me...or what I like to do...as pathetic as that may sound.

Can you provide a little more concrete detail on what will happen in the coaching calls after I complete the inventory?

Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,

Needs Clarity
Chicago, IL

Dear Needs Clarity,

I'll give it my best shot to describe what will happen in the coaching calls. Clients come to me with different needs. Since I take my lead from the client, I'll describe three typical clients to exemplify what I do...

Client 1 is feeling very restless. She is married and works full-time, and she is not feeling fulfilled in what she is doing. Life is okay, but she feels like the world has more to offer and she's just not tapping into it. Her relationship with her husband is fine, but she feels like that could be more fulfilling, too. She comes to coaching with a request for help on figuring out her priorities and what's next for her. She is interested in discovering what will light her fire and help her feel more alive.

Client 2 knows exactly what his priorities are, but he's feeling really stuck on moving forward. He knows what he wants but does not have a clue about how to get there. He comes to coaching with a request for help in defining some concrete steps to get him moving forward in the direction he wants to go.

Client 3 is clear about priorities and has an action plan, but she is not following the plan. She feels very discouraged and like a failure. She keeps telling herself that she is going to do ABC by a certain date, but then she doesn't do it. Each time she does not follow through with her plan, she feels more and more like a failure. She has no explanation for why she isn't doing what she says she will do. She comes to coaching feeling very stuck in a rut and discouraged…like she will never accomplish her goals. She asks for help getting unstuck and following through with her plan.

In a nutshell, I help clients clarify their priorities, come up with concrete action plans, and partner with them to motivate and hold them accountable for following through with their plans.

If you are interested in experiencing a complimentary coaching session to see how it works, I offer the first one at no cost and with no strings attached. I ask that you bring something to the call that you want to focus on. The best way to understand what goes on in a coaching call is to experience first-hand how it works.

The Personal Inventory is a tool I have designed which provides space for you to identify what it is that you want in your life. If you are feeling stuck with this, we can start with the parts of the Inventory that you are able to answer and go from there. Some of my clients choose not to answer all of the questions, or don't know how to answer some of them. Completing the Inventory is not a prerequisite for beginning coaching.

Going through the Personal Inventory will help you to identify what you ARE clear about and what you are NOT clear about in your life. It serves as a template to help you create your own personal "road map" for your life. Someone once said, "If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there." If you don't have and follow a plan, you will go from day to day aimlessly wandering and taking whatever path presents itself to you -- whether that is the path you would CHOOSE or not.

Coaching is about CONSCIOUS CHOICE, INTENTION, and ACTION. You're absolutely right -- it will require an investment of your time, thought, and effort. When you invest in your life in this way, the rewards will be greater than you've ever imagined.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have additional questions email me or would like to see if you qualify for a le a complimentary coaching session click here.

Warm regards,

Kathy Paauw
