Ring in the New Year
with Intention

The Power of Asking

Studies have shown that many people start off the New Year with resolutions, and by the third week into January, they've already "blown it" and have given up on striving toward those goals.

Although many people start working toward achieving goals the first of the year, we can start fresh anytime we choose! It's okay to make mistakes, as long as we learn from them and make adjustments. That's just the way we learn.

I've found three key ingredients to successful planning for the New Year:
  1. Celebrate your wins for the past year.
  2. Clarify your intentions for the coming year, as well as the motivations behind them!
  3. Build daily accountability and support into your daily life as you live the coming year with intention.

I’ll share a few great tools that will help you incorporate these ingredients into your planning.

1. CELEBRATE YOUR WINS

Before planning for 2012, I encourage you to celebrate your wins for 2011. You may not realize how much you have accomplished, so I'll share a resource that will help you to record and celebrate your wins. Jim Bunch is a Life Coach I have worked with, and he offers a free tool to help you remember all of your wins for 2011. Click here to access his Year-end Reviw process.

2 . CLARIFY YOUR INTENTIONS

Are you likely to usher in the New Year with optimism, gratitude and clarity? Or are you more likely to greet 2012 with pessimism, a scarcity mentality, and confusion?

Although the news focuses on the doom and gloom of our present economy and it’s easy to be in “auto-pilot” mode and buy into that, you also have the option of choosing what you focus on. What you focus on will have a profound impact on what happens in your life in the coming year.

To thrive in 2012, stay in gratitude, maintain a positive emotional state (despite what others say), keep focused on your goals, learn new skills, take inspired actions, and develop supportive habits.

You probably have a few New Year’s resolutions for yourself, but do you have written goals that are specific, measurable, and BIG enough to really take you to the next level? If not, Jack Canfield offers a simple and effective worksheet for plotting out your goals and intentions for the coming year.

Jack's worksheet is an excellent tool for getting clear about what you would like to be different in several areas of your life. When you complete this worksheet, I encourage you to dig as deep as you can for the WHY behind your intentions. For example, if one of your goals is to leave your office by 5 PM daily, you might be inclined to write down for your WHY, "Work less hours." Identify what is behind your goal that has some juice to it! A deeper WHY might be, "so I can be home for dinner with my family and build deeper bonds with my spouse and kids." The best way to uncover the deeper WHY is to ask yourself "so what?"

Complete this sentence as many times as you need to in order to uncover the deeper WHY::

I want ______ (your goal) so that I can ________ (your deeper why).

Every time you say YES to someone or something, you are, in fact, saying NO to someone or something else. By identifying the deeper WHY, you are creating a more compelling reason to say NO to an old habit or activity so you are available to say YES to a new intention.

3. BUILD IN ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT

Begin connecting daily with an accountability partner. Share three daily intentions with your partner by sending an email. Identifying three kinds of intentions daily – happy, healthy, and wealthy--will provide balance in your life, which is a very important part of success. Why strive for wealth if we are not happy and healthy in the process?

You determine what will make you happy, healthy and wealthy, however you define each of those. In order for this to work, you and your accountability partner will need to commit to emailing each other by the end of the previous day for the next day. In that email, you'll report DONE or NOT DONE for the intentions you had for that day, and you'll also list your intentions for tomorrow.

I have written a book called The Music of Your Heart, and chapter 11 is devoted to a discussion about establishing effective accountability partnerships and using the process I describe above. I am teaching a free teleclass on Thursday, January 12, 11 AM Pacific / 2 PM Eastern, and the topic will be Building in Accountability. To listen via Web link, click here or dial 206-701-8388, meeting ID 272094# at the designated time. If you are unable to attend live, click on the link above anytime after the call ends and you'll be able to hear a recording of the call.

If getting more productive, organized, and profitable is on your list of New Year's resolutions, I hope you'll register for my FREE Buried in Paper webinar I am teaching on Tuesday, January 10 at 11 AM Pacific / 2 PM Eastern.  Scroll down the page for more information.

Teleclass: Build in Accountability

Once a month I offer a free 30-minute teleclass that focuses on a specific Freedom Challenge from my book, The Music of Your Heart.  Freedom Challenges are exercises designed to help you clarify, create, and support your path to freedom so you can live the life you desire.

The next class is Thursday, January 12, 11 AM Pacific / 2 PM Eastern. The topic will be Building in Accountability (chapter 11 of my book).  Please attend, whether you have read my book or not. I promise there will be value for everyone!

Ready to Get Organized?
Need help getting organized?

This FREE webinar will help!

Is this you?

  • Do you often wonder where the time went?
  • Does your to-do list keep getting longer, even though it feels like nothing is getting done?
  • Have you totally given up on keeping a to-do list?
  • Do you have trouble finding what you need?
  • Do you feel like you’ll NEVER catch up?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, I can help out by teaching you some powerful techniques that will help you increase your personal and professional productivity. In fact, don't be surprised if you can add an hour or MORE to your day EVERY DAY.

Imagine what you would do with an extra hour each and every day. That is an additional 365 hours or over nine 40 hour work weeks of extra time. Think of this next time you make the statement, "I wish I had more time".

Here's what you'll be able to accomplish when you attend my upcoming webinar and put what you learn into practice:

  • Set your priorities and focus on what matters most (do this and you'll be amazed at how fast you can start crossing things off your to-do list).
  • Remember important follow-up tasks BEFORE rather than AFTER… (wouldn't that save tons of stress not to mention embarrassment?).
  • Efficiently handle mail, filing, returning phone calls and other repetitive tasks so you'll have more time to do the things you LOVE to do.
  • Streamline information management and communications (no more time wasted on information that's "interesting but not relevant" to what you need NOW).
  • Relax and enjoy a less cluttered environment.

Buried in Paper:
Learn a simple five-step process to help you eliminate paper pile-up forever

Send encouragement and appreciation to those you care about...without leaving your home or office,
for less than a dollar a card!

When was the last time you sent a cards in the mail to people you care about?  Many people have quit sending cards because it has become too time-consuming and too expensive.

Check out a wonderful high-tech/high-touch tool that enables you to easily and affordably send a real paper greeting card to someone you care about, without leaving your home or office. Standard cards are less than a dollar and you don't have to spend your gas and time driving to the store and post office to get it in the mail. You can even add your own photos and videos (using a scannable QR Code) to the card. Include a gift or gift card if you like!  The best part is that you don't have to stuff, lick, stamp, address or take it to the post office. Everything is done for you.  You just type your message and click SEND.

This is one of the best ways for a business owner or independent professional to stay top-of-mind, which translates into more business.  It's also a great way to stay in touch with family and friends in a meaningful way.
